I use an app called hopper. It monitors typical prices and will notify you whether it is smart to buy tickets now or wait for lower prices.

I suppose it depends whether it's going to be a domestic or international flight for you. I was lucky that I had friends who've been coming for years, so they gave me the nod when they thought it was time to buy a flight for the right price. That was Monday. There may be cheaper flights in the future, but I'm happy I've got mine now. So basically, like me, you've got to weigh up security and peace of mind in getting a flight now, with hoping to pick up a bargain (if flights are available) later on, or paying through the nose just to get there if not.

The Ferret and I have a couple of concerns with flights. Being on an island we have to factor in flights/ferry to the mainland (Vancouver or Seattle). Of the two airlines that fly out of here, one goes Vancouver-Toronto-Atlanta, the other goes Calgary-Toronto-Atlanta, both about 14 hours. We're checking direct flights from Seattle, but again, add on flights or ferry and/or hotel overnight to the costs. Struggle with this every time, but we'll get there one way or another.

For the past 4-5 years I've found the best fares, in my case from Boston, in either March or April.  When I look earlier they aren't as low.

I've had good luck using Yapta.  I find some of the flights I would like to take and then have Yapta monitor them and notify me when the prices drop.

Good luck,

Thanks everyone!  I'll use a couple of trackers and purchase when the time is right.  Stop looking later so I don't drive myself crazy.  Since we don't have much choice how we get there, doesn't really matter.

I guess we could take a couple weeks off and drive across the continent. hahaha.  Anyone from the west coast need a ride?

Kevin, Look today! I'm seeing flights from Boston at $140 round trip on Jetblue. Crazy. I'm probably going to pull the trigger now.

UPDATE: I just booked an afternoon, round-trip, direct flight from Wed-Mon flight on Jet Blue for $140.  Hey it seems this is likely an error, because at the moment if you link through from Yapta or Kayak, it lets you book flights and pay for those dates.  However if you go directly to the Jetblue site, and try to search you can't get past May 2017.   I'm all booked, paid with confirmation numbers.  Go now!  ;)

Just saw this now and good time of day direct flights from Boston to Atlanta are around $175 which is much less than I've paid in recent years.

Thanks so much for the heads up.

Persephone, thanks for responding!  I have been watching Westjet, hoping for a fare drop.  We are flying out of Comox, as well.  Travelling to Victoria, while no ferry needed, is a pain in the butt.

"WestJet has sale for 632 cnd out of Victoria airport. Two stops but saves ferry time."

Woohoo purchased our flights from Westjet today.  Have a return flight for two for under $1300 cdn.  Pretty great price!  I am glad I waited out to get good connections and a good price.   :o
