Social Dancers?

I'm just curious if anyone else here likes social dance. If so, what style(s)?

I like almost any of them that I have tried, though I have the most background in East Coast Swing and Salsa/Meringue/Bachata.

I used to teach for Fred Astaire and Arthur Murray. Swing, Tango, Waltz, Hustle, Rumba, Samba, Mambo, Cha-Cha, etc...

I love to dance, and I try to dance as much as possible to any kind of dancing there is. It would be great to get a group together to go dancing at all/most of the dances at Dragon*Con. If you can dance all night and know or are interested in learning any formal dancing let me know! I know several basic steps to east coast swing, ballroom, rumba, salsa, foxtrot, or just informal stuff. I'm 28 yr. old, 6 ft., fit, hetero, male.

Bardicraptus, that's exactly what I'm thinking. It would be fantastic to get together with other social dancers at the dances.

This year I wandered around The Mechanical Masquerade thinking: "Well, that's a waltz. And there's a Cha-cha. There's another Cha-cha. Where are the social dancers hiding? I'm sure Dragon*con has a decent population of them." I danced on my own for a while, hoping to attract a partner. But no luck.

This year was my third year at Dragon*con so I still feel fairly new. What are the making-it-happen options? So far I'm thinking: 1) beg Atlanta-area social dance companies to do a few classes at Dragon*con (after all, there was bollywood and belly dance this year); 2) convince someone else to do a few classes at Dragon*con (I thought about doing it myself, but I'm a horrible teacher); 3) network for an informal get-together at Dragon*con where we meet en masse (before a dance or at a dance?)

Thoughts?

I love social dancing, the waltz & swing in particular. I'm more than up for a pre-dance meet-up. (Info: 24, Male, Hetero).

My suggestion would be since this is the first year we'd be doing it, to just keep it simple. Meet up as early as possible to share what we know with each other, and just work on getting people familiar with the basics. From there we can discuss which concerts, balls, dj's we would like to target. Make a plan to meet up and do what we know. The biggest thing to make this grow is going to be pulling in others who don't know about it. Guys will have an easier time, as we're supposed to lead. Teach some basic steps and mingle, then invite the newbies to the next dance we're going to. My hat is off to any ladies who can teach while following at the same time, I can't even imagine how that would work.

If this plan is to grandiose for the first year, we can keep it simple and just swap partners as we go amongst ourselves.  I would be happy to facilitate, but I don't want anyone to think I'm try to take over and run this thing. I am no lord of the dance. I think a future workshop would be cool, but with as much trouble as the established costuming track had with it for 2012, I'd suggest holding back. There will also be a lot of dancers at D*C who have never been on the forums, so recruit anywhere people talk about D*C.

Sounds cool. Let's co-ordinate closer to the Con, if that's cool.

So for those interested is this going anywhere? Who would be interested in doing this flash-mob? any particular dance style we can all agree on? What steps might we need to learn? Is there an even mix of male and female dancers?

I would love for this idea to pick up steam and truly happen. Flash-mob style would be fine with me (does this mean meeting ahead of time to figure out partners and styles, then breaking out at a dance?). More subtle is fine with me. I would just love to help activate and to be part of the dragon*con social dance community.

Does anyone have an inside line to the playlist for any of the dances and know if a particular dance is more social-dance friendly?

There are plenty of people here who are more experienced, talented dancers and more involved in Dragon*con than I am. However, you may be busier than I am too. I would be glad to help make this thing happen. Just aim me in the right direction.

I'm going to start by attempting to make a poll of social dance styles, with multiple responses possible. Everyone, please mark any social dance form that you are comfortable leading/following. If I'm capable of making a poll under the website restrictions, I'm going to assume it's okay.

Edit: If an administrator could change the maximum number of votes per person to 52, that would be great. I planned to make separate polls for lead and follow, but only 1 poll is allowed per forum topic. Now the system will not let me increase the maximum votes. If increasing the maximum votes is not possible, feel free to delete the poll and I will start over.

Trathor, you are the administrator in this discussion. I would like to take my cues from you. Feel free to pawn me off on some other trusted member, though. I'd like to gather essential day/time/place/dance style data and make a dragon*con facebook page post soon, if that sounds like a good start to you. This is assuming that Dragon*con has an official facebook page....

I have exactly 0 social dance experience but I've always wanted to learn.  I'm happy to come if someone can teach me a few steps! (Day/time depending)

Momentum!

DJkafka you still out there? Flash mob would be amazing, don't know if we can get enough interested parties, but there are still a few weeks to figure it out. We would definitely have to meet up before hand to figure out partners, and what steps each of us know. Anybody arriving Thursday? I'm getting a prepaid just for D*C with unlimited minutes and text for all my new friends. so I'll post that info on Wednesday so you all can get a hold of me.

I'd also like to recommend planning the mob for near the end of con, so we have time to recruit, and/or learn additional steps during those unplanned windows of free-time that inevitably pop up.

My vote is for swing dancing as this would give us some flashier moves without the complexity of some other forms of dance. If any of you ladies know how to whisk, I'd be up for waltz also.

I can teach all the introductory steps and some other basic moves, but if anybody out there is a ballroom hobbiest I'd love to learn some intermediate techniques.

Would anybody be able to bring a portable boombox for the music? Dancing to the sound of people milling about at D*C i think would just look a bit weird, but you guys may have some other insight.

0 dance experience is fine! I know there is a real possibility we'll pick a dance style I don't know, just because more people know it. If so, I will get to learn something new. Just like my other thread, these things are primarily a social opportunity and a willing spirit is all that really matters anyway.

I am ALL about this.

I modified the poll per your request (was at 26 votes per user).

I used to be pretty good at 1/2 the dances listed... been more than a decade though, so best I know is I can do Carolina Shag no problem, Swing (but not pretty), Cha-Cha (will come back to me after about 15 min I'm sure).

I have sent a request to the Dragon*Con Office making a pitch for a room for us.  I asked for any room, any time, no equipment needed (I have some speakers that will do the trick I believe).

I think the best bet is to make posts on facebook and live-joural, but provide them a link to this page.  To find our how many/ etc., your post is the best (although I will say as a guy who loves social dance, your list is long and intimidating)
