Pre-Con tip to prevent con crud: start taking vitamin C!  I have been trying to remember to take it.

What, you don't travel with a Dr. who can prescribe medications on the fly?

true story: first time i went to ATL on vacation, i ended up needing some meds; called my MD in... MD, from the drugstore, who was happy to fill the scrip, 'til they realized the doc was out of state.  they very apologetically told me they couldn't fill it.  i had to go sit in one of those doc-in-the-box places for three hours to get 5 antibiotic pills. :P  we all have better places to be sitting around.  (hence my up-thread suggestion to make sure all the Rx drugs are filled *now* instead of, say, august 31. ;) )

Have a check-list.  This is a little OCD...but go along with me.

I ALWAYS forget something at the last minute so I pack way ahead of time.  PLUS I always pack my packing list to pull out a few days before.  I write down everything from the cosplay pieces to toiletries to every single road food we are bringing.  Chances are something is in the living room when it should be in the suitcase or still in the fridge when it should be in the road cooler.  WRITE IT ALL DOWN.  If you are a newbie to navigating Atlanta, this includes looking up the directions online so that you can have a backup written copy of directions as well as your Garmin's GPS.  They are forever doing construction on my I-75 route through Tennessee so it can throw off travel to or from sometimes, so always have that backup that your Maps tool can make use of.  Windows 8 has a Maps tool that gives alternative routes to avoid construction, which helps for things like that.  Be sure to look it up prior to leaving to rule out construction woes/delays on your trip.

Tip 1 : make sure to get a concealable container to hold alcohol for the track parties, otherwise you're going to be paying $6-8 per drink. I buy a coke and then add my own rum.

Tip 2: Things get crazy at DC so trying to catch up with people can be crazy.  If you're going to go to track party with friends, talk to people before the con and set a time/place to meet up.  Last year, we waited in line for an hour for the superhero's ball, only to find out that our friends weren't inside.

re: keeping in touch

some people have business cards made up with their email addies and FB handles and badge names and stuff, to give to new ppl they meet. (or is this considered Pleistocene technology in this age of smartphones? ;) ) anyway, you still have time to make those if you want.

This is a VERY good idea especially if any of you are in any trades that vendors would find useful.  I know of several authors that have ran into people at DC that offer them deals with Agents or even contacts with people at TV channels that might be interested in making their books into series.  You want to get yourself out there if you're an artist, writer, actor, etc., be sure to carry your cards with you and have plenty printed up beforehand.  Go to the track panels that pertain to your line of work that you are in or are interested in getting and get those cards out there.  You might be surprised at the results that you get.

An out of state MD should be able to call in medications for you- unless it was an insurance issue or something odd.

i have usually found the little sample bottles of various things (toothpaste, shampoo, sanitizer etc) either at the ends of the cosmetics aisles in the grocery store, or in a section of bins in the big drugstores like CVS.

generally i would think now is the time to start idly browsing your local drugstore to make sure you have enough of your travel sized personal hygiene stuff.  there is a honkin' big CVS between the hyatt and the westin (and i believe it's 24 hr?) in case of emergencies.

and in case the crud gets the best of you, list of nearest CVS minit clinics; there's one in the GP bldg near 'con but it's not open on the weekend:

Emory University Midtown is just north of the Con on Peachtree.  Probably a 10 minute walk.

This was fifteen years ago now, i think.... I'm glad things have changed. :)

Look at getting an extra cell phone battery or two.  That way if you're in a line where you're not next to an outlet, you can just swap batteries if needed.
