Had I opted to be a lifer, my 20 would have been up Ocober 2008. Being a former Sailor (EOD), there's a heavy reliance on both skill and luck. Recent years have stressed all branches of the EOD corps-without being offered an instructor's position-I left.

Since I would love to have access to the local Exchange, but cannot, I'm simply offering the civvy way & rate to go.

Okay, I just checked and the store across from the Sheraton says that they will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 11:45pm.

Holy smack! Thank you very much for all your help and advice! I will definitely stop by the Mom & Pop store. I appreciate all the digging you did, OBWan, on the store's location and hours, that was above and beyond, seriously! Thank you!

(I'm getting giddy-excited that the con is in a few days. This morning I'm seeing if I can wedge everything in one carry-on case, haha. We'll see if it will fit with room for stuff to bring back, which I know I won't be able to resist buying...)

No problem, I needed to know for myself as well.  Even though I'm local I still might need to pick up some things.

About getting stuff home.  You can use FedEx or UPS.  Many hotels have a drop-off point for packages for the convience of their business guests.  To use them you will need an account with a credit card, but you should be able to set one up over the phone or on-line, then you can get details on where to get your package picked-up.

OB-Wan,

Does the Publix down the street from the Hilton sell beer/wine?

It should.  Most supermarkets in Atlanta carry a large selection of common beers & wines.  For instance, the Kroger near my house has one side of an entire aisle of beer.  (And chips & pretzels across from it - imagine that.)  If it's a specialty item you might not find it.  But they will have your garden-variety imports.

I haven't worked downtown in years (pre-Publix in fact).  But that would be normal for an Atlanta supermarket, especially one downtown.

Can I just repeat something that I only saw mentioned once?

PERSONAL HAND SANITIZER

If you're not familiar with "con crud", it's the logical result of putting 35,000 people from all over the country together in a relatively small, enclosed location. Germs spread like crazy and everyone gets to find that one completely brand new strain of crud that they don't have antibodies for yet.

But these really don't spread through the air. We think they do, but any doctor will tell you that airborne contagion is nothing next to contact contagion. Everyone using the same escalator or stairwell grips. Everyone pushing the same elevator buttons. Everyone leaning on the same railings. Everyone opening the same doors. Germs spread like crazy.

So get a bottle and squirt a little on your hand at least once an hour, and always before touching your face or eating. You may be amazed to discover that you don't have to come home with a case of con crud.

Thanks, pkitty...... So my Mom WAS right!!!  :) Okay, my germ-phobia has kicked into high gear. I'll be the middle-aged woman with my Windex in one gun holster and my wet-wipies under one arm! heee heee heee.... I love the smell of cleaner early in the morning!

Happiness doesn't depend on how much you have to enjoy, but how much you enjoy what you have.

One thing to remember is that those stores will probably be closed on Monday  - the ones in the Sheraton and the Marriott certainly were last year. Luckily I was leaving Tuesday afternoon so I went on Tuesday morning, but for anyone leaving Monday you might need to get it sorted before then. :)
