Favorite Dragon*Con Activities?
« on: February 06, 2009, 04:48:34 PM »
Thought it would be good to have a new thread on the things you like to do most at Dragon*Con.

I feel like I can't fully describe to people *what* Dragon*Con is, since it is so many things, depending on what you want to do.  Each year, I find more things that I add to my "I have to do that next year" list.

 - Cheesegrinder:  D&D with a great twist... bring your own cheesy character and run through a dungeon grind... when your character dies, you stand up and someone else takes your spot.  It runs for 48 hours straight, often many tables at a time.  Get's more popular every year.

 - Other gaming:  I wish I had more time to check out the other various games going on, and would love to play Arkham Horror again.

 - Drum Circle:  I have to spend part of my Dragon*Con walk-about in here even if I never spend much time there.

 - Suite party:  Last year was my first time at a Suite party, and it rocked, although I would like one with more space to play some drinking games.

 - Arcattack - http://dragonconforums.org/index.php?topic=18.0 :  Man, they were AWESOME.

This is just a small taste of what I enjoy about the con... more later.  What do you guys dig?

People-watching! :) And being with friends I only see this once a year.

The Skeptics, Science and Space tracks...especially panels with James Randi & Michael Shermer...and the "Bad" Astronomer, Phil Plait!

The YA Lit track's Yule Ball.

I'd like to try the Drum Circle, Arcattack, and night-time concerts other than those of Emerald Rose (who I dearly love, but it's time to try someone new!).

Come to one of our suite parties. You will enjoy it and we have games going on if anyone wants to play.

Cell numbers will be posted closer to the event.

Drum circle. Yummy.  :)

Every year I look forward to the panels and the parties, and every year I spend about ten minutes at each party and attend one panel if I'm lucky. :)  The biggest thing I enjoy about D*C is talking to new people and checking out their creativity (and I'm not just talking costumes).

Plop me in one spot for an hour, let me people watch, then move me elsewhere and I'm a happy camper.

Does anybody here walk in the parade? It's on Friday, right? How would a new person go about entering it? We're thinking of a Star Wars costumes, but some of the Jedi groups are pretty strict... with good reason. So, maybe we'll try some other costume, though.... x-men / egyptian .... etc.  :)

The Dragon*Con Parade is on Saturday, at 10 AM. You will need to be at the park where the parade begins by 9:30 AM at the latest, so you can be assigned your spot in the parade. You may want to check out the Miscellaneous costume group, depending on how many people you will have walking with you.
Remember to either bring water with you, or drink plenty before the parade begins (and remember to...well, you know, too, so you won't feel like making a mad dash to the potty!). There is water supplied at the end of the parade route, which is the back of the Marriott.

Cool, thanks for the info. Have you walked in it? Any estimate on how long ... not that it matters to me. I assume it just depends on where you are in the line up and how much waiting around you do before your group walks. But, time doesn't register when you're having fun!!!!!
I'm trying to impress my tiny group of 2 with all the knowledge that I'm gathering. Maybe it'll get me a free beer?! ...but most likely not!!! heee heee heeeee..... p.s. I joke all the time about "astronaut diapers" but maybe I'm not too far off from a good thing..... of course, there might be diaper rash... then there's the smell.... and a puffy hiney as bad side effects!!!!!!! :-\  I think a quick, last minute run to a facility is the best bet!  :) And, yes..... I'm getting lots of different people stating that water is important, so I will definately have lots on me at all times. :)

Ok, yell at me later.. this is lengthy..... but maybe helpful? I signed up as a new member, but work blocks my from getting to my Yahoo mail. (Those punks, they must expect me to work or something?!!!) :)
I found this info here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dc_parade/

Description
Welcome to our Dragon*Con parade discussion group!

The 2008 parade was a blast and we'll start planning for 2009 in January! Our 8th Annual Dragon*Con parade is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 10:00AM in downtown Atlanta, GA.

We welcome groups, large and small, as well as individuals wearing costumes representing the wide variety of interests found at Dragon*Con. We invite you to sing, perform, role play, interact with each other and your audience, pass out candy or other goodies to the onlookers along the parade route. Banners, flags, streamers, floats, decorated vehicles, music and other noisemakers are allowed and encouraged. Show off your alter ego! Be creative! Have fun!

You must be a member of Dragon*Con by parade day in order to march with us.

Pre-con parade registration is strongly recommended. It's quick and easy, just click the "Database" link to the left in the nav bar and chose the 2009 record to sign-up. If you have questions, post a message in the group or contact us at dc_parade at dragoncon dot org.

Come on in and explore our group. Check in often for updates and interesting parade tidbits. You'll find a lot of great people, information, ideas and discussions about the parade, pictures, and search for contact information for kindred spirits and groups.

Dragon*Con is America's largest, multi-media, popular arts convention —focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film - and held annually over Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. You'll find more information about Dragon*Con at http://www.dragoncon.org.

This looks like a good thread to revive as DC approaches....

I've seen Rocky Horror Picture Show a lot of times in the past, but there's nothing like getting together with a thousand or so close friends and dancing the Time Warp!!!

I look forward to buying plenty of comic books! Graphic novels and trade paperbacks mostly. At conventions, graphic novels can usually be found for dirt cheap! I'll probably spend about 70 bucks on graphic novels, and have enough reading material to last me for months! I'm an art fan, I only read books with drawings. Sounds sad I know. Well, I've tried reading several novels lately so my gf will think I'm not childish, but I'm sorry... after a lifetime of reading comics, trying to read hundreds of pages of only text bores me to tears and I can never finish a book.

Finally...

...someone who's going to D*C for the reading material!

I've been a comic collector since I was nine-years-old: 1985, and I (really) go to Dragon*Con for the books.  Right now, I've moved on to vintage magazines to complete a few collections, but I still pick up a few comics or graphic novels to keep me busy.

Man, I can't wait.
