DragonCon Parade
« on: August 09, 2013, 10:09:34 AM »
Quick question:

What time does the parade start on the Saturday?
I know that there is a new route for it, but I can't seem to find the time.

Thanks.

Starts at 10:00am, but you will want to get there WAY earlier if you want to see.

We tried to get down there at 9am last year to get a good spot.  It was already pretty crowded.  We got a nice spot with some families and a bunch of kids.  They had blankets down, and folding chairs, so it was really easy to see over all the seated kids. :)  Worked out perfect!

To get their good seats, I believe they said they got there at 7am!!!   :o Oh my goodness, I don't think I can get out of the room that early on a Con day!!!  And with young kids?!  I don't know how they managed to do it.

Last year we got there a little before nine, wasn't crowded yet and found a great spot near the Suntrust Building (peach/baker street).

Just be sure to keep your ground once you get a good spot. We had a few rude folks that just came before 10 and nearly shoved us away to get a good view, or just rudely parked themselves in front of us on the streets.

Of course we politely told them where to go and watch the parade   ;)

I usually get up at 8 and grab breakfast and get down there by 8:30 to set up my tripod/camera. My friends usually show up around 9.

Every year some soccer mom shows up at 9:30 yells at me for getting a spot right on the street and not letting her bratty kids sit on the curb where my tripod is at.

Anyway, I'd say 9ish or a little before is a good time to get set up.

I just heard.  My group will be up front again this year  8)
We'll be the Colonial Marines with Xenos and Preds and several national flags as we're a multinational group :)

Also jazzed that the route is longer this year :)

If you manage to get up in time ;)  Steve is a terrible alarm clock.  Although, his snoring might wake you!

I'm a great alarm clock.  I literally just do a running jump and land on him roaring*.  Sometimes in my lion kigu.  It's awesome.

*Roaring = yelling "roar", not actual roaring.

Does anyone think that it will be worth it to wake up to look from the Best Western balconies? Looks like the staging area is right in front of there. My group is always far too hung over to get up for the actual parade on Saturday, but I'm wondering if, with the new location, we'll be able to see some stuff as we hang off the balcony mainlining caffeine and aspirin...

I rolled out of bed at 10am and was able to watch it from my balcony at the Hyatt last year.  It was great- mimosas, nutrigrain bars & no mean soccer moms... haha
