Best/Personal Favorite Host Hotel?
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:29:04 PM »
Hello,

I've seen a little online from several years ago and asked the question on a couple of facebook groups but trying to get something more recent/comprehensive.  I tend to favor the Hilton from what I have read and as it's the only host hotel I've stayed in.  Unfortunately though I had a res there this year I wasn't able to make it to the con.  It's possible (likely) that with the voucher system I won't be able to get a room there but I'm curious about what is the favorite or least favorite of the hotels and why?  I like to be close/connected to the Marriott since I really love just hanging out there have heard good things about the other two as well.

Thanks!

We've stayed at the Hilton twice and enjoyed it both times.  it was quieter but still conveniently located for everything.  Last time, in 2013, we stayed at the Westin and it was fine too, but we found it a little out of the way.  We like to go back to the room now and again to chill.  We are booked in the Westin again for next year, though, unless we can swing a room at the Hilton again.  Just happy to have any room booked so we can start planning. Already looking forward to it.

I added a poll to this. My vote is Marriott, hands down. Centralized location. Decent elevator bank (though I've always gotten 2nd floor there.) Friendly staff. Biggest party.

EDIT: I've also stayed at Hyatt and Hilton.

I believe I can help you here. We actually have threads about this in our Full Members section (Reached by hitting 100 posts**) but I will sum up the feelings about the hotels for you from there and you can read the in-depth posts when you reach 100 :)

Marriott:
It's party central, it is also the central most hotel. However, elevators are a nightmare and people were dropping stuff off the balconies. It can be quite loud for long amounts of time but overall so much fun.

Hyatt:
More panel and contest orientated. Elevators can be a nightmare depending which tower you are in. Still heavy on the action in this hotel.

Hilton:
This is for you gamers. Mostly quiet but connected. You've stayed there you know the drill.

Westin and Sheraton:
Quiet hotels with moderate stuff to do..like Registration and being next to the Dealer's Hall.

Despite the fact that the Hilton has now charged me 2x my original reservation rate before changing to a 3 day stay (so I should have been charged for only 3...not 6 twice...still gotta get that cleared up,) I will say that the elevators seemed to be a bit better there. I like the gaming being right downstairs too, although I never got down there to play anything this year.

I love the Hyatt....so much so that I try and stay there the other couple times I'm in Atlanta.

I've stayed in the Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, and Westin.

Favorite -  Westin - Pretty quiet, great rooms, relatively shorter elevator waits, two of my favorite tracks are there.

The Hilton would still be my number one if not for an unfortunate nap that necessitated a reservation in the Westin a couple of years ago. The Hilton Honors rewards program is the best one out there in my opinion. The staff is pretty nice.

The Marriott has become the "it" hotel. The annual Marriott land-grab was a nightmare even before Passkey. Plus, the elevators are a nightmare at times.

Least favorite -  Hyatt - Has my favorite con bar, elevator hell.

Yes, I'm old, and elevators are a big deal for me now.  ;)

Thank you Vayliya for passing that info over from the other thread and thanks everyone else!  I actually managed to grab a reservation for the Westin and one for the Hyatt...  I got the Westin as a backup in case I missed the Hilton but since the Hyatt was also connected to the Marriott I had to fight the passkey thing but finally got one.  Just want to decide and make sure my Hyatt deposit doesn't have any snags after hearing last years issues...

I don't really mind walking to the Westin or Sheraton for panels but I like to hang out at the Marriott late...the first year at DC I had to leave by 1 or earlier due to the Marta so that was part of the push for a Host hotel.  Not a big partier but enjoy being around anyway...and wouldn't mind at least trying to go to one lol.  I requested a low level room at the Hyatt so I could always potentially use the stairs.

Hmmm...

So hmmm, probably still try for the Hilton though it's probably a no go.

Haha I kinda felt a little bad about it given the troubles everyone have had.  I did have to fight the stupid PK thing for a long while and had my phone dialing repeatedly in my other hand.  I didn't figure I would get thru the PK thing so...  When I decide though there will be another available though, probably Westin since it would probably be easier anyway.

I was also trying to remember how I got that Hilton room before, I don't remember having any troubles or really having to fight for it...couldn't remember if it was passkey before?

I have 2 rooms as well. One at westin and one at the Hyatt.

While I haven't stayed at them all- I did go into them all. The way I'd probably rank them is:

Hyatt- Quite a bit happening without all the fuss.
Marriott- party central but a big maze.
Hilton- Quiet but still connected to the skywalks.
Westin- Has the advantage of hosting panels and raves - however not connected to the Skywalks.
Sheraton- Out of the way but does have registration.

I liked the Sheraton being out of the way. I'm an introvert so it was nice to be able to be like "Ok, enough con for now!" and run back into my turtle shell, erm hotel room far away from the main bustle.

Me too!  My husband likes it because even if the elevators are crowded there's only 11 floors so you can always take the stairs.  Had a bad experience at the Westin 2 years ago when we were on the 32nd floor.  :P

I have stayed at the Hilton (Year 1), the Westin (Year 5) and the Sheraton (all others). I prefer the Sheraton although I have no real problem with the other two. I would love to stay in the Marriott just so I can perhaps share an elevator with someone famous.

No real elevator problems.
The staff is *always* in a good mood and they enjoy the con almost as much as the attendees.

While this is not applicable to whether you stay there or not but because they are not in the "party" zone they are able to handle lines there better than the other hotels. I love the early actor panel where I can get down to the panel room at 7/8am and be the first or one of the first people in line.

Don't really want to go thru another frantic hotel rush but I may at least give the Hilton a shot.  May not put as much effort into it already having a backup though.  This week I've been on vacation from work so I had the time to keep at it lol, hopefully the next one falls on my day off...
