Anyone ever stay at the Marriott?
« on: February 24, 2015, 07:06:35 AM »
We're staying in the Marriott for the first time this year. Anyone have any tips on checking in, out, or navigating during the convention? I'm a little nervous since it's generally the craziest hub.

Go up to go down.

I love the Marriott, I've had rooms there the past few years. Few things to note. IT WILL BE BUSY THE ENTIRE TIME. Now that that is out of the way, things that can help: Checking in early, checking out a day later to avoid the worst of the crowd.
If you check out on Monday, be prepared to wait a long time for a bell hop OR pack light enough you can easily carry it. Most of the elevators will be unavailable for moving your mountain of gear when Thursday rolls around. We ended up carrying 4 rolling bags, a cooler, and lots of stuff down the stairs when we needed to check out. It can be very rough but there is no better hotel to be in the center of it all :D

I've stayed there several times during con and always had a good experience.  As Vayliya pointed out it will always be busy there so just be patient and get to know the different elevator banks for the different floors.

Take care,

I've been going to DC for 10 years and have stayed there 5 times.

Here is what I do for checking out on Monday AM. At some time during Sunday late afternoon or night pack up all the stuff you won't need anymore for the con and take it down to your car. Just keep what you will need for that night and next morning. That way when you leave you will only have a bag or two to carry down to your car. Makes it much easier during checkout.

When you check in, give the valet a good tip. He may be inclined to park your car on the ground floor which will make getting out a little faster.

When you check in try to request a lower floor room. That way you can use the stairs if need be. I tell them that I'm afraid of heights and they usually keep me at floor 6 or lower.

The Marriott is a great place to stay. It's easy to navigate and you will find that on average it's the best location for your home base, being most centrally located. The biggest panels are held there. You have crosswalks to the Hyatt and Hilton. Enjoy it! It's getting harder and harder to get a room there anymore.

Thanks! Anyone know how early one that usually check in on Thursday? My husband and I have gotten in the habit of packing most of our stuff up in our car Sunday night for those very reasons. A few years ago we had to carry all our belongings down 28 floors at the Westin and them back up 4. Never again! lol

I've thought about it, but to be honest, I've never been able to get through to get a reservation.  I like the small, relatively uncrowded little hotel we get every year, but wonder what it would be like to be in the thick of things.

I've never stayed at the Marriott before. I've stayed at the Hilton and Westin for DragonCon in the past as far as host hotels go. I've stayed at the Hyatt and Sheraton for other conventions. We normally try to get into the Hilton as we like the quieter corner it occupies and it has lots of good eating options and the parking lot is convenient but we couldn't get in this year. I'm sure we'll enjoy staying at the Marriott but we'll probably try to get the Hilton again next year since it's so convenient.

i want to stay there some time, but not for DC; too crowded.  but it's a very cool looking building.

Ok I feel I need to say, if you get a low level floor, and follow the standard elevator rules the Marriott is just a hotel that can't be beat...too great of a place to people watch.

I have to agree with Vay.  There are more vantage points in the Marriott than just about any hotel, so people watching is easiest here and the most rewarding.  I've stayed here several times, in ten years roughly about six times.  It's more the party hotel these past few years than it used to be; in earlier years the Hyatt used to be the party hotel...why the shift I don't know.  If you want to avoid playing hotel elevator roulette after getting to the garden levels you have plenty of easy access stair banks to navigate, and there are so many easy access points to every hotel you can from point A to point B in a flash.  Plus... you want the most amazing and sci-fi looking hotel in the host hotel list?  Marriott is your winner.  :)

I've stayed at the Marriott mostly... but also started at the Hyatt and Hilton and what used to be the Days Inn (my first year and I didn't know what I was doing). By far, the Marriott was my favorite (and I even had international tower rooms at the Hyatt).

You can't really get a low floor unless you check in on Tues/Wed.
Last year we had a super easy time with checkout on Monday. Takes about an hour to get a bellhop, but you can plan for that. We usually fill up the car then have them repark it so we can enjoy some more con. More tips for this of course. The year before even getting a secret bellhop elevator was difficult. It varies, I suppose.
It is always crowded, don't stay there unless you like to be in the middle of it all- literally.
Sear is delicious if you want one fancy meal at con.
Don't bother with starbucks (unless of course you get crazy lucky and there is no line).
Also don't buy alcohol at that little store even if you're desperate. It's way over priced lol.
Try the stairs instead of the escalators sometimes.

Thanks! Is it difficult to get to the hotel rooms during the day/evening? The Marriott elevators always look swamped. We'll most likely pack our things up Sunday night like we usually do, and I imagine we'll park at the airport again until Sunday night since that worked out well last year.

OH MY GOSH I have to agree.  Their salads...they hollow out half a head of HUGE lettuce as the bowl for the salad.  The salads area work of art with everything that they include in them.  And the shrimp they serve...have you ever seen the Nick Drake And Josh movie titled "Really Big Shrimp?"  Well, there ya have it.  Worth every penny for a meal there.

I have stayed there twice. I would definitely try to check in early if you can to avoid the crowd. I didn't have trouble getting to my room, but that was a few years ago before it started getting really crowded. Get a lower floor and use the stairs if you can. There are coke machines in the back stairwells for cheaper drinks. Check it out if they are still there. (I think they were $2) No problems with noise, even from the 5th floor. If you get a floor below 10, you can watch the lobby pretty well and just check out the scene. I wish I could get a room there now, but it's too popular.
