2017 Volunteer Meeting Updates: Meeting 1
« on: February 19, 2017, 08:11:24 AM »
Boo!  Sorry I haven't been around much lately.  I have had probably one of the most challenging years of my life.  But I at least have the meeting notes from last night, so here we go:

-  Most tracks that were located in the Americas Mart will most likely be relocated back to the Host Hotels (DC was not happy with them being over there either, but they had no choice as there was so much renovation going on in the other hotels, but now that that's done, woo-hoo!)

-Hilton renovations that are currently going on should wrap up mid-year.  The Front Desk will move to the front of the hotel along with the FedEx office,  and the Market Place has already relocated to the back with new tile down in the lobby and a new restaurant in the lobby left.  Room 201 and the pool...eliminated.  Hilton Salon shall be expanded to a full sized ballroom by end of May; this means more and larger programming for US.

-Whedonverse track...eaten up and spit out.  (Personally, not happy that it is gone, but what are you gonna do.)

-  Tolkien track has been absorbed into the High Fantasy Track.

-LAN Gaming in Westin and Tournaments with Cash Prizes will be live streamed.

- Nominations for Dragon Awards now open.  Dragon Awards Collective Facebook Group has been created.  They said to  think of it as the Oprah Winfrey Book club for nerds...a place to send your recommendations for the books and movies and games, etc, that we would all enjoy and should spread the love for.

-Charity has been decided:  Special Olympics of Georgia.  However, they ask that you point out to other charities that you know of that we now have an online charity application that they can fill out to ask to be our next charity at DragonCon.  We keep them on file for three years for consideration.

-April 29:  DragonCon Superheroes will be doing a Lupus Walk.  Stay tuned for more details on site and in Facebook Groups/email for more information.

- April 30th:  Volunteer Appreciation Day @ Sugar Loaf Mill Dave And Busters.  Entire place rented out just for us.  March 13th is RSVP deadline date.  Buffet open all evening.  Free play games and game cards given out to us for free for games NOT on free play.  Giveaways all evening.  Emails going out to volunteers soon for save-the-date.  Keep watch.

-Toy Drive for Childrens Health Care:  Teens and Young Adults 13-22.  Taking donations at DC office and at each Volunteer Meeting.   Amazon Wish List set up for viewing and also you can view website for suggestions.

-Individual sign-ins are going out to all volunteers to give us access to the Volunteer Data Base.  This is not only so we can keep our personal information updated; we will be able to keep track of our schedules, manage staff meeting information, etc.  It will be a fully-functional staff site.

-Big duh on this one ....ALL HOST HOTELS ALREADY SOLD OUT.

- Ritz and Omni now have moderate DCTV coverage.

-MomoCon, as a DragonCon partner, came to us looking for volunteer assistance, particularly for their Gaming area.  See their site for details if interested.

"It takes a soldier who knows his orders to walk the walk I'm supposed to walk.  And love like I'm not scared. Give when it's not fair.  Live life for another.  Take time for a brother.  Fight for the weak ones.  Speak out for freedom.  Find faith in the battle.  Stand tall and above it all."

Quit tempting me to volunteer (my Wife would kill me :) )! Security and TechOps seems like they could be fun.
