Was wondering the pronuciation of Aes Sedai ...?
« on: February 18, 2009, 04:23:16 PM »
Howdy, my first post... and I'll have many more questions, but this one has bugged since I picked up my first Wheel of Time book. How is this pronounced? [AES SEDAI.]  Like "ACE" or is it French sounding?.... Like "A's"?  And the last part is "seh-dye", right?  I'd love to greet the Aes Sedai at the convention with a "Good afternoon, Aes Sedai" and a curtsy.
p.s. It'll be my first time to Dragon Con and I'm excited!!!!!!!  ;D

I believe:
EYES SEHD-EYE

But I think there are others here that would know better than me!

Looking forward to having you at the Con... what are the things you are most interested in seeing/ doing at the Con?

Ahhhh!  :) Thank you for the translation. I will remember that one - and use it whenever I see a pretty dress and shawl. I think I'll mostly want to watch. I'll be happy seeing all the people, people in costumes, see what the vendors have, see the parade, and see what the panels area about. I don't know alot about any one topic, but I'd love to sit and listen to what folks say in different discussions. It would be nice to make friends down there since there's only 3 in my group... and we're from Indiana. We don't get out much!!!!  haaa haaaaa haaaa.....
I'm reading all the posts in the forum to get ideas - so I can maximize my fun. Any other suggestions besides drinking water, being polite, and taking little naps here and there? (BTW, very good suggestions!) Oh, and I wouldn't have thought about bringing my own liquor.. I like that one, too.
Oh.... we still haven't figured out a hotel :(  I'm getting antsy about not having one yet. Oh, also (haaa haaa...) how soon can I sign up for 2010 and get the DC rate? Sorry for all the questions.... I'm just really excited to get to go! :)

In theory you cannot get the rate until it is announced here:
http://www.dragoncon.org/location.php#Host_Hotels
However, there are unconfirmed reports of people booking the following year while at Dragon*Con... which I plan on investigating when I am there this year.

SPEAKING OF WHICH - If you want to get a host hotel room (and trust me, you do), BOOK NOW!

I would recommend the Hilton out of what is not sold out.

http://encyclopaedia-wot.org/organizations/aes_sedai/index.html     If you visit the Kennesaw Room (basement of the Hyatt) you'll find more Aes Sedai, Amrylin Seats, warders, Asha'man than you can shake a stick at.

I would recommend the Hilton out of what is not sold out.

We stay at the Hyatt.  We've had our suite since last Sept early Oct of last year.  I can even tell you the room number (for those of you that have partied with us before, well its the same place as the last two years).  It all depends on who you speak to at which hotel if they will let you book or not early.  The Marriott and Hyatt were both sold out before the codes ever came out this year.  Book early, tell them you are with DragonCon.  CALL THE LOCAL NUMBER, DON'T GO THROUGH THE 800#.

The 4 host hotels are sold out (for DCon rooms).  You might can still get a room at NON DCon rates.  4 years ago, we didn't book our suite until mid July.  But then again its just myself and my husband, we don't mind the extra cost for a suite.  We're old enough that we don't have to do the room share thing.

I'd also say the EYES SEHD-EYE is correct.  I met Robert Jordan at book signings at early Dragon Cons before he got sick.  I think that is how he pronounced it.  There is a Jordan Con in Atlanta in April that is being hosted by the same people that do the Wheel of Time track at DragonCon.  His widow, cousin, and the writer for the last book are the main guests.

Tom Doherty, the founder of TOR books which is RJs publisher, as well as Brandon Sanderson, (dude Harriet picked to write "A Memory of Light") will be there also.

My other half and I have been signed up for JC since early last year.
