Achievements Segment Screening Machinima

Hello!

I have never been to DragonCon but I am very tempted to go this year.  It not only looks like a lot of fun but our machinima "Shelf Life" has been selected for screening!   :)

I assume there are a bunch of machinima playing since it is an hour segment and machinima films are generally only a few minutes, but then again an hour is not that long.

Anyway, I am wondering if there are any machinima makers or fans here that are going to DragonCon and looking forward to the machinima segment?

It is a big investment to get over to DragonCon from San Francisco but it seems like such a huge event and something to not miss especially if you have something taking part in it!

So I guess I am here to have you all convince me that I should not miss this and to maybe invite you to check out Shelf Life and the other machinima showing at DragonCon if you are attending.

I would probably be going solo though.  : (  But I am sure it would still be fun and I am sure I would meet some cool people.  : )

I love watching machinima!

Were you involved in the story/concept or the actual development of the short?  Is the film based on a popular game engine, or do you use your own animation software?  I've got some experience with 3DS and LightWave, but only as a hobby; anyone who's seen a good machinima film knows that there's some real skill at work behind the scenes.

Also, if you've never been to D*C then you should really consider coming.  I've been going since '93, and it keeps getting better every year.  You'll meet hundreds of cool people and stare at thousands of cool-looking people.

Hi!  Yes, there are two of us and we wrote the story, created a script and storyboard, skinned our characters, created maps, did faceposing using some great voice actors, edited it, created original music...hehe, we put a lot of work into it and did it all.  It uses the Source Engine, such a great engine for machinima!

You can check our channel out...but hopefully you will want to watch it at DragonCon also!  hehe.  http://www.youtube.com/user/pixeleyesproductions

Yeah, it sounds like a great time, it just starts to add up once you include a flight out there, hotel room, ticket to attend, then all the food and other stuff.  But then again, I have always cared more about great memories so it is probably worth it.

Do you usually (or ever) go in costume?

You should definitely consider coming to the con.  I don't know if you'll be able to find a room at any of the host hotels, but you should be able to stay in Buckhead (a northern enclave of Atlanta) or at the airport (south of the city) and take MARTA into town each day.  My wife and I have done it before, even though we only live 20 miles away from Midtown Atlanta, because getting around in the city can be challenging if you don't plan ahead.  This forum's got some great advice, but if you need a native's perspective just let me know and I'll give you the scoop on navigating your way around the city.

I've never gone in costume, but I always pick out a cool T-Shirt to wear; you've got to remember that it's late August/early September in the South.  I don't know how they do it, but the cosplay people seem to be OK wearing jackets and full-body makeup in the sweltering heat.  God bless them, they have to be miserable, but you'd never know it considering how much they drink and run around like crazy people during the day; I suppose that the A/C in the hotel keeps them from getting heat stroke.

At night, it's crazy in a good way.  There's literally too much to see in such a short period of time.  Make sure to download and view the schedule on August 24th from the site http://dragoncon.com so that you can figure out what you want to see, and when you can see it.

I just watched your spot and I've got to say that I'm impressed; "the fucking tower of Babel..." (Continued...)

(...Continued)

The music in the intro credit pan was amazing.  The animation (through the trees) was captivating.

Carles Wentworth and Rutger Zellman's meeting was creepy and engaging enough to make me want to watch the rest of the film. Was the awkward silence in the cafe an homage to L. Ron Hubbard (science fiction writer vs. scientist)?

I sense a Lovecraftian kind of pseudo-science horror in the film, which I love, in this story.  By the way, Julia's a great (and hot).

I'll stop right there and proclaim my love for your series; you have really made something special.

Please let me know if you're coming to the con and I'll buy you a drink at the Hyatt.

Wow thanks for all that info dr.zeaus!  And thanks for the kind words and great feedback on Shelf Life! It is exciting to here that kind of response.

I did not even think about the heat there, I am used to the chilly San Francisco summers.  Yeah, I would leave the costumes to the dedicated pros, or just the dedicated.  I will definitely try to work out the trip, I actually might have a potential place I could stay but not sure how convenient it is so the airport hotel option or something might be best, thanks for the tips.

It would be fun to be there to watch Shelf Life with at least a small group of people.  I guess 150 or so people could fit but not sure it will be that popular of a segment.

And for sure, if I end up making it I will hit you up for that drink!    ;D
