Hi guys,

i just had a quick questions.

i'm saying about a 7min. walk from the con, and since this is my first con in in another country, i was wondering how safe is it to walk from the hotels to the convention? i head that there is a shuttle bus that goes around but i have no idea. any info would be helpful thanks!

where exactly are you staying?  (i promise not to stalk you...)  it is my understanding that the shuttles can be kind of hit or miss. but depending on where you are, you may be fine walking back and forth. the area around the hotels is usually very well populated by fairly reasonable people from friday morning thru monday afternoon.

I think you would be ok walking.  The general area around the host hotels is still very crowded with con goers.  Like Charis said where are you staying and we can better determine if you are fine to walk?

What overflow hotel are you in? Shuttles can be unreliable at times. My first Dragoncon I had to walk to the Super 8 on like Cone Street at 2 am because the shuttle did not show up for the final scheduled pickup. Some overflow hotels are close enough you will still be in populated areas but others can be scary far.

The area is a business area during the week.  Local/business traffic as well has Con traffic can be heavy on Friday which slows down the shuttles.  That won't be as much of an issue over the weekend.  Still, walking to and from will probably be faster.  The area right around the hotels is relatively safe as long as you pay attention and are in a group.  There will be lots of people, ~50,000, of your closest friends doing the same thing.

Please let us know which hotel you are staying in.  I think its an important part of your question. This area of Atlanta straddles a good and not so good area.

Also, something to remember is people's idea of 'seedy area' and 'safety' is relative.

I for one have no issues around there, because I grew up in a far worse area (inner city Liverpool) so what's bad for here, isn't so bad to me. So, where (roughly) are you coming from, so we can better advise.
But yes, you'll probably walk., unless a bus is there waiting to go.

if it's the one at 101 Andrew Young Blvd, you should be fine.  just walk big, keep your wits about you, and don't flash cash or anything. :)  there will be LOTS of other congoers at that hotel.

Hi I have not been to DC for over 20 years. I'm coming with my daughter and  my girlfriend and her daughter. We're staying at the omni hotel. How far is it to the con? How safe is it to walk? I'm concerned for our teenage girls.

ok, that's a little bit of a hike. during the day you should have no problem (except for the heat :) ). after dark, i would stick together, walk big, maintain situational awareness, stay in the lighted areas.  there are going to be other con-goers at that hotel, but not as many as at the hotels on the other side of the park. if you find yourself heading back at 1 AM or something, it might actually be worth taking a cab.

DC does provide shuttles to various hotels, but they're few and far between and i don't know if they cover the omni.

oh, and welcome back!  :D

It's up hill as well.

Based on last year, it looks like the shuttle runs to the Omni but its the longer shuttle loop.
