Looking ahead and Booking Rooms
« on: July 18, 2014, 10:49:35 AM »
As DragonCon 2014 approaches quickly (although still not fast enough) I'm looking ahead to 2015.  When does everyone start booking hotel rooms?  Next year I'd like to score a Host Hotel and am interested in everyone's strategies for scoring a room.

How do you do it?

When you are at DC2K14, each hotel will post a sign (as we will here and other websites will) when 'Passkey' will open for registration.

They you will have to race... not the other humans who are all trying to get a room... you are literally racing your electrons against their electrons as you try to reserve a room at the same time as tens of thousands of people.

Good to know!  I'll have to keep an eye out for that as well as prep for the days the hotels open up for booking.

Is booking online the best way to go or is calling the hotels directly more effective?

Some will swear one way, others the other.  Honestly, there is a good amount of luck involved too.

I have done it by phoning in as well, after the rooms booked up online i phoned the hotel and complained how the web site was crashing. They let me book a suite for 250 plus taxs a night.

I think I got mine the Sunday of the con last year by phoning the hotel. I asked for the Dragoncon Rate and got it.

Out of curiosity which hotel was this and was any cajoling, begging, pleading, bribery, acts of an adult nature, etc required?

Trathor has come close to acts of adult nature for rooms before.

Technically not allowed, but you never know unless you ask.  Just don't expect it to work.

First choose which host hotel you want to stay at.  They all have different registration starting dates and times.  My SO and I normally tag team this and are trying to book a room at the same time (on different computers of course). I used to make phone reservations several years ago, but that was when you could still get a host hotel room in July!  Ever since you have to book in October, I use the online passkey way.
Attending Dragon Con since 1998....

Same here.  The SO and I will both work the online passkey to get a room and then throw a party like we won the lottery when we manage to get a room in our choice hotel.  I'll even block off my work calendar for 30 min before and after the go live so I don't get screwed up by having a meeting booked during the time frame I need to be at my computer.  We've been fortunate that the years we weren't able to get a room that another friend did and was looking for roommates.

Question for those in the know:

2015 will be my first time going to DC.  If I register for a 2015 membership now, will I get a code to use for getting the DC rate for hotel rooms at the nearby/connected hotels?  Any other tips for someone who has never gotten a room for the Con would be appreciated!

Currently the host hotels are on a passkey system, well Marriott and Hyatt are. Hilton and others have already been booked. Overflow hotels and overflow rates won't be available until the host hotels are all full. They don't release D*C rates for other hotels before then. However if you pay full, some of the hotels may allow you to book early (excluding some host hotels I believe.

Was able to secure a reservation at the Westin today.  Try calling the local number and go from there...

The Hyatt passkey opened this morning at 10am, but quickly filled (I was unable to secure a room). Now it is indicating no rooms available. D'oh!
