So...now that Dragon Con 2013 is part of history, I'd like to bring up a few positive things about our community here on the Forums and our Members ('cause that's what makes this place so special!).
For me, as a long time DCForums member, I've seen this site grow over the years...both in terms of traffic and has developed a sense of community family. The friends I've met here, have grown into friendships outside of Dragon Con.
Almost a year ago, Basheesh incorporated a Forum rating system...Applaud or Smite (+ or -). The site's growth over the past six months has been huge, and with it, great advice, help, wisdom from Con vets, along with a good dose of helpful information from D*C virgins/N00bz!
So, my point here is this:
If someone posts something insightful, helpful, funny or offers up their place at Con for a frakkin' room party...hit up their + Karma! That's what it's for! ;)
The "other" rating...(-) Smite, it's there for a reason, but let's not abuse it. If you start seeing some negative numbers showing up next to your Forum name, check your recent posts and ask yourself if what you had posted may have not have come across the way you had intended.
So, closing this on a positive (+) note, we have a lotta good people here, let's focus on that Applaude when you see that helpful/funny post :)!!
UPDATE BY TRATHOR (7/21/14)
Hey guys,
As we grow, so does the forum have to evolve. I'll make a new locked sticky that outlines details of how Karma works, and leave this one open for discussion on it, but here are a few updates:
- Good Karma: This makes people feel great. Please give out good karma freely.
- Bad Karma (smite): Be aware that many people are sensitive to this, and if you are going to give a point of Bad Karma, try to keep these things in mind:
- Don't give away more than one bad point per 'point', that's just bad mojo.
- If you give bad Karma, you should be able to articulate in your mind why you have that negative point. Not saying you have to give it, but many people want to know so they can help improve their Karma.
- Try to not give bad Karma when you are angry. You can always take five minutes/ something else first, and see if you still feel bad Karma is warranted.
Bad Karma has a function, let's just be aware of the implications.
-
Will Do Admiral General Will do ;)
-
Agreed.
There are things we can do to link into Karma in terms of forum access/ rights/ etc., however those are not enabled. It is great for what TheDrunkenJedi has pointed out here though.
Please do not take negative Karma hits personally though, take it constructively - it's feedback on how people felt about your posts. Use it to help.
-
I have notice that I keep getting smite, and I'm pretty sure I haven't said anything rude or otherwise improper but owell.
-
So is there anyway to know who "applauds" or "smites" you?
-
So is there anyway to know who "applauds" or "smites" you?
Nope... even admins cannot see that.
-

You can always guess if on the who's online you see someone applaud or smite and then your karma changes
-
Everytime I get a smite i know where it comes from! He's going to get his one day....yes...vengance will be mine!!!!
-
If you accidentally applaud or smite someone can you take it back?
-
^
Nope.
-

You would have to wait an hour and correct it with an offsetting Karma rating.
-
I have a crazy question...how do you give karma??? I have yet to figure that out. Please don't blast me if this is a stupid question. :-\ I've never been on a forum like this before so I just don't know some things. I've search to see if it tells you somewhere but couldn't for the life of me find anything that tells me how.
-
Appalaud +=good
Smite- =bad
-
Do you just type that when you reply?
-
If you look at the avatar/photo on the left a post, you'll see the Karma count. Under the Karma count is a Applaud / Smite link. Just use those, don't have to reply to have them work. Just click on them, I believe.
-
oH HM I don't have those! Is it tied to how many posts you have or something like that?
-
You won't see them on your info, just everyone else's (the people you want to Applaud/Smite). Any post restrictions I can't speak to, Trathor or DrunkenJedi would have to help there.
-
Well nope they aren't on anyone's boo! Maybe it's the browser i'm using. (chrome) I like people's stuff! I wanna give points!
-
I use chrome, so I doubt it's a browser issue. You'll have to talk to an admin.
-
Oh well. I'm sure it can get figured out. Thanks for all the help guys! :)
-
Look at the attachment, if it does not look like this for you, let me know in a PM and I will sort it out. I did set it so you cannot change karma without at least 6 posts.
-
Oh ok. Yeah mine doesn't look like that. I only have 4 so that's the reason. Just wanted to know if it was something like that. No worries. I shall just keep postin and hoping for more good points!
-

Maybe I should have shown someone else's... send me a screenshot of what you see under my Karma number... you should see an "[applaud] [smite]"
You have 52 posts... I had made the limit to have at least 10 posts.
The only Karma you cannot change is your own.
-
This is what I see... (http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll179/sisterbleedingheart/forum.jpg) (http://s288.photobucket.com/user/sisterbleedingheart/media/forum.jpg.html)
If the rule is 6 karmas then no worries. I just thought I was doing something wrong! (that's usually the case)
-
I don't have the applaud or smite either. I had thought it was maybe tied to post count.
-
Just FYI Lise, here's what I see for you...not sure what the post count min is (if there is one)...but I'm pretty sure I had the karma buttons before I hit 100 and you're at 90

I played with my settings. When I joined the group mature member the applaud and smite showed up and when I left the group, to test it, they disappeared again. So I think to give applaud and smite you have to qualify as a mature member and join the group.
-
How do you join the group?!
-
Profile
Account Settings
Group Memberships
Mature Member Join Group
-
Girl you are a peach! That totally worked. Now that I can... +1 to you!! I'm telling you I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my brains. Thanks for all the patience, everyone, with my doltness!
-
^ahhh... found the improper permission setting. Now anyone who has more than 6 posts (or is a mature member) will be able to update Karma.
-

I cannot see applaud or smite. So is it 6 "posts" or 6 karma points? ;)

6 posts. Check again.

;) I must be dumb or something odd happened. It's there. I'm going to applaud you!

You are not dumb, I had one more category I had to update... 6-50 post range. :-)
-
Is there a starting negative Karma, or did I somehow manage to piss someone off already?
-
I just looked at your 4 posts. Nothing bad about them.
I'll even you out at +1 to bring you flat.
-
I was wondering how the karma thing worked, I am very glad I read this post. I am making a effort to read all the pinned posts as before I thought I was getting bad karma from not posting in the proper area. or not signing a letter. Just kind of bums me out a little then thinking that people did not like what I posted then as I did have problems with the verification questions and had to refresh many times. I almost gave up joining this board because of it.
Oh well. C'est la vie
-
Ok good to know.... but i am unable to find the karma rating do flicky button.
-
I swear it was not there before..but i see it now
thank you.. lol

As you mentioned above, such is life.
+1 for you for researching

It's all about attitude. Make people feel good/ etc, karma will probably go up. Come across as excessively negative, it will probably go down.
If it goes down, how about asking why... You are likely to have some of the people tell you why.
If you don't care why, don't ask.

Is there a way to limit the Neg karma, where you can only Smite a post once?
-
I'm assuming there's a minimum karmic level to see the karma buttons. (If not, I'm blind. If so, I need to be more amusing and post more! :) )
-
Look under your post count (to the left).
-
I'm not even seeing the Karma links anymore. I just see Posts and Karma with the Profile and PM links under it.
-

Nope.
There's a member here who has well south of -700 Karma. So relax.
-
I'm not even seeing the Karma links anymore. I just see Posts and Karma with the Profile and PM links under it.
I also see the Karma and Posts numbers but no way to + or - a post or member. I was/am assuming this is based on not having enough posts or karma yet to see those features.
-
I had the ability to give karma yesterday. Today those options are gone.
-
You'll now need a post count of 100 in order to give karma - or +

Time to spam some postings! Er... I mean to contribute greatly to the community!
Also this is absolutely not a post to pump post counts. I swear... ;D

o.O wow, that's hardcore negative karma. Hmm, I thought SMF had a way to prevent negative karma/cap karma scores. Maybe I'm just remembering wrong. When I ran my student forum, we used phpBB, then switched to SMF. So maybe I'm remembering the phpBB way of doing things. I eventually had to turn karma off, in my case, because I live in a pretty conservative area (cuz lol Alabama), so any time a liberal made a post in the politics subforum, he got nuked into oblivion. ::)

Noted. No spamming. :)

+1 for promising to not be a Spammer...see we are easy to make happy XD
-
Does this mean that there might be a black market created for "applauding"?
Is it within the rules for me to, hypothetically speaking of course, offer someone a financial reward to do my applauding? I *did* win 1000 Quatloos when I picked the winner of a fight the last time I was on Triskelion. ;D
-
+1 Bama Bellatrix
Agreed! +1
