Title: FAQ: Apple iOS or Android Apps to use at Dragon*Con
Post by: Trathor on July 25, 2012, 11:54:38 AM
I don't have an android device, so I will have to let others post that here, but here are a few tips and tricks to try to get the most out of your iPhone/ iPad at Dragon*Con.

(1 ) Should your iPhone/ iPad get lost, put information on it in a way that an honest person could get it back to you.  This could be a sticker, or for me, I take a picture of "if found, please call XXX-XXX-XXXX and say you found Trathor's phone" where XXX-XXX-XXXX is the number of a buddy who I plan to be around most of the con.  Then I make this the screen you see when you press the 'home button' (without having to log in).  Not saying a lost phone will make it back to you, but at least gives a chance to get it back.

(2 ) Enable location services on your device, so apps can use them (and you can find your phone it if get's lost):
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4995

(3 ) Install 'Find my iPhone' (Free):
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8
If you loose your iPhone, you can ask anyone else to install this app (or maybe they have it installed already), and you can log into the app on their phone with your information - it will tell you where your phone is, let you send alerts/ sounds (in case you lost it under your bed/ etc), and even remote wipe.

(4 ) Install Find my Friends:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8
You can set up temporary (or permanent) rights for friends to see where you are on a map.
Trying to meet up and not sure where in the heck anyone is?  Perfect App for that.  Remember you can set it to expire anytime, and you can disable visibility of where you are with the touch of a button.

(5 ) Install Phream:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phream/id528465531?mt=8
Want to take pictures at Dragon*Con, but only want to share them with a limited group of friends (and not everyone you know on Facebook, including your parents)? Phream lets you join and share pictures to specific groups, and even let's you retract pictures the next morning when you realize you have shared more than you intended.

(6 ) Install Bump:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bump/id305479724?mt=8
To be honest, I always do this manually, but bump let's you add contact information between new people you want to add you your contacts list with low effort.

(7 ) Facebook:
OK, so maybe you do want to share your Pictures with the world, or just do general updates:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/facebook/id284882215?mt=8

(8 ) Install Photosynth
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photosynth/id430065256?mt=8
Cool/ easy app for taking fully panoramic pictures.

(9 ) Voxer:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voxer-walkie-talkie-ptt/id377304531?mt=8
Free Voice/ Picture/ Messages (only costs data)

Those were some of the top ones I recommend.  If you have ones you like, tell us here and why you like them.

EDIT:  Added new apps.

+1 for Phream. There's a new version coming out soon that makes it essentially "Instagram With Privacy In Mind."

There's also the official Dragon*Con app that will have all the schedules, etc.  It's free and should be released shortly before the con.

I am not a gadget/computer geek by no stretch, but using the DC app in 2011 was a godsend.
Two-thumbs!

Here are the Android Apps I use in relation to DC:

I use QuicPic to view pictures since I can't stand the Android Gallery App. I scan in my autographed pictures before hand so I know which poses/signatures I already have.

I also use QuickOffice to read the text file I keep my DVD/Blu-Ray collection on, so I don't end up buying duplicates. I'm sure there are specific apps for that, but a text file works fine for me, though I can easily maintain it on my PC/anywhere.

I also frequently use RealCalc and ConvertPad for a calculator and unit conversion. And before the DC app came out, I used Adobe Reader to view the PDF of the Program Book/Schedule.

Since I haven't jumped to the whole ebook bandwagon yet, I pass the time waiting in lines by reading fan fiction using the Android Browser, or QuickOffice if I've already downloaded the story as a text file.

And in general, I can't stand Android music player, so I use MixZing since I prefer to play by specific folders as opposed to Artists or Playlists.

I'm also starting to rely upon Gas Buddy to find cheap gas near me, though I don't go to far out of my way to save 1 or 2 pennies. It's mainly to find the cheaper Mapco or Raceway instead of the more expensive Shell or BP.

...agreed! Gas buddy is awesome! Looking forward to trying out the official Dragon Con app too this year! Definitely wasn't available last time I attended DC (2006) lol! So, anyone have more Android-friendly apps to recommend?

Dies a little on the inside.

I second the request for Android apps!! Some of us don't have the moola for those fancy devices from that fruit-named company!  Surely there must be some D*C veterans on here who have an Android!

And if you want all the world to have them, I do accept handouts, haha :P

I had a MacBook once...it was lovely until it decided to completely fry the motherboard after roughly a year of use. Guess it decided suicide was its only option...

The point of that story? Android apps, please!

So not so hot on the Windows Phone 8 eh?  That's OK, nobody else is either.

And I quite literally want there to be less.

Any Android/Windows suggestions, veterans?
