This is a wonderfully useful thread - thanks everyone for all the helpful tips! We've never tried parking at one of the MARTA lots/garages before, sounds like a great idea! Is it logistically difficult? Do they mind people leaving a car there all weekend? It could save us a ton of money as we usually try to stay at the Marriott and their valet parking is super expensive!

Different MARTA stops are different, but the forum can recommend some specific ones depending on where you are coming from.

Great option though. Especially for those coming from airport.

Awesome!  How does the MARTA work - do you have to buy passes per trip or can you get a pass good for the weekend?  We're coming to Atlanta via I-20 from SC.

Probably best to buy one way passes. I'm not super familiar with all of the stops, but if a native Atlantian does not chime in, I find a recommendation.

Looks like it very much depends how often you plan to ride. Buying single passes may be cheapest.

If you buy a ticket and do not use it, you can transfer the ticket to someone else for $20.  Buy your ticket before 2/13/09 before price goes up.
tickets are not transferable anymore. :( Just a suggestion.

I've parked at MARTA in some capacity for the last 6 cons. Assuming you pick one of the stations on the northern lines, I'd feel quite safe. The one I've used over and over is Dunwoody-- never had a problem. It's a little further way but only $5/day instead of $8 like some other stations. It will take you roughly 25 minutes on the train to get to the Peachtree Center station (your exit for con).

Logically, the only difficult part is carrying around your luggage. Therefore, I've started to drive my car to the hotel, drop my luggage off, and then drive to the MARTA station and park there. A little time consuming, but it saves you money and the hassle of trying to balance boxes and bags and luggage.

As for which pass to buy, I would recommend one trip at a time. When you purchase any sort of pass, you get a reloadable card. So there's no point in buying more than you need. Just add a trip to it as you make that trip. I made the mistake of buying an extra trip that I didn't use since a friend ended up giving me a ride to the station.

It's going to up to the researcher to take note of the age of some of the posts and how some of the information contained has either changed somewhat, or things may have been added/deleted over time by DC.

Thanks SO much for the very comprehensive answer!! Turns out, we ended up booking the Holiday Inn Express Downtown for the full weekend and their parking is only $15/day which we can definitely handle, so that's what we'll be doing this time around. Good info for the future though! :)

In your budgeting, remember to include the money you'll spend before dragoncon - for costumes, food and drink you may be bringing with you.

Costumes are not factored in due to the huge variations in costs.

Some may choose simple, low cost (under $20), while others spend thousands.

Was hoping to go this year but work changed my schedule last minute.  Guess I'll have to start setting aside funds for next year now.  :-(  Was so ready to go.
