Understood. Search function is helpful, but give us a chance. :-)
GAH!!  Car forums are the worse for that! I cringe everytime i see "search noob"!
To me, one of the ways you decide if you want to join a forum community is how people interact with you. Posting totally new topic is scary and just randomly chiming in can invite scorn or ridicule as well. By asking questions you get to see how friendly people are and how helpful. For old timers, answering the same question over and over again can get frustrating but I would rather do that and grow a potential relationship than just "search noob" them...one of the reasons I like this place so much is how nice everyone was when I joined.

I feel like there's a big difference between posting a topic that has a very good chance of having been created already (like hotel information) vs. a topic that may or may not've been brought up yet (like a specific costuming question), too.

I'll be honest -- I don't always use the search feature, though I think it's extremely helpful that it's just at the top of the page instead of having to click a link to bring you to the search page and then having 50 different search options to select from like on some forums.

Might be worth noting, you can make your search specific to that board by doing the search from the top of that board (or thread)... Not that I designed it or anything, but what I have noticed when I am searching.

There's a couple of firearm-related forums that I used to visit...way too hostile of a place just for research.

@ Astrid - I like to think that most people here on DCF are really easy to get along with so don't worry about making a "ding dong" out of yourself....heck, we practically encourage it! My wife also tries but she has no "geek cred" at all.....well, other than marrying me anyway.....

To all the other noobs and lurkers....post dammit! Unless it's about Dr. Who....then go somewhere else...... ;D Just teasin' Astrid.....

I do what I can to get on here frequently, but I'm not at my computer that much. I admit, I lurk a bit but it's just because there is so much great stuff to read about, I'll chime in my thoughts when I feel I have something worthy to say. I don't want to post just to get numbers by name though. With that said, there are a bunch of nice people on here regularly that are fun and engaging to converse with.

Good read and a great reminder! I'm often afraid to post on forums like this where there already seems to be an established 'family' of sorts - don't want to come in and break up a good thing, you know? So, I'm usually tempted to just read along and post only when I have something truly important to say LOL - that being said, everyone here seems pretty wonderful, so I guess not much to worry about in that regard!

Just for good measure... (((free hugs... and rum)))  8)
