OMG Photos! 2014 Edition
« on: September 18, 2014, 10:10:31 PM »
My Dragon Con 2014 photos are up over at http://www.dividedbyzero.net

I didn't take anywhere near as many this year in an effort to enjoy the convention more in person and less through a lens.

Hope everyone had a great time. Thanks to those that stopped for a photo and I hope to see you all next year!

Thanks a ton! Not a problem with the likes, the more the merrier, lol. If you want, like my page as well if you want to follow my cosplay photography. (I'm also dangerously close to 300 :) )

I shoot with a Nikon D600. Lens wise, I use a Sigma 50mm 1.4 and Nikon 70-200 2.8 the majority of the time.

Fantastic photos! I needs me a better, faster lens.  Great stuff.

I only managed to take a few photos this year, and most of them were panel-related. - https://www.flickr.com/photos/ktetch/sets/72157647672591981/

I took a lot of video though (over 100gb, still processing it) and here's a few bits.
The Thursday night Midnight countdown, from the 37th floor of the Marriott
Worlds of Terry Pratchett Panel, from the BritTrack, 10am Saturday (Parade time), Moderated by yours truly.
Heartburn from the Heartbleed Vulnerability  - the first of the EFForums track videos I've done, more details on the panel page including the slides.
And a Sneak preview, of Hacking 101.
That's 3 videos down, 33 to go.

What kind of flash or lighting setup do you use? I'm still trying to figure out a good even lighting method. I shoot with a canon 60D and an external flash combined with whatever new soft box cover I'm trying out each year. Still haven't found a good one. 😔

Sorry for the long delay in replying, lol.

All those photos were shot with either a single speedlight in a Wescott Rapid Box 26" Octa or with a speedlight on a flash bracket with a Gary Fong Lightsphere for diffusion.

Thanks! I looked into the Lightsphere last year and may have to revisit it or something similar this year. The Octa looks fun but I'm not ready to go that bulky yet.

The Octa has become my favorite modifier for conventions but you are right, it is a bit bulky. Overall its pretty lightweight though and easy to manage (especially when I con someone into being my lightstand for a few hours).

I would definitely look into the lightsphere. If I am not using the Octa I am using it. The collapsible version is nice as well since it folds down and you can just shove it in your camera bag.
