Changing costumes...again
« on: June 18, 2009, 03:00:41 PM »

Argh!  I still have time to do some of what I had planned, but my theme has totally changed.  I will most likely end up wearing my collection of sarcastic and geeky t-shirts all weekend.  I'm just feeling so lazy this year...

So does anyone know where I can get or borrow a Brown Bess musket?  I'm reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and thinking I need to base a costume around that.  Nifty book, btw, and makes Austen readable. :)  I need a musket and a katana, though, and possibly a zombie head.

Thoughts?

I think there is a really cheap musket in the attic. I was purchased in St. Augustine FL when I drank from the fountain of Youth and now look like I am 15 years old.

It's not a Brown Bess but I would certainly sell it to you for cheap plus shipping. Let me know. It's a toy, but does shoot cork balls using caps as force.

Oooh, got a pic?  I'm interested, for sure.

My thoughts on this costume is possibly just a toy katana, zombie head, and some fake blood splashed on me so I appear to be the Zombie Warrior the Elizabeth Bennett is in the P&P&Z book.

Do you guys know how strict security is with gun props with the costumes?  I read the rules on the official site and they say that anything that fires a projectile (even water guns) is forbidden.

According to the Dragon*con website:

Quote
Please abide by our weapons policy: All weapons must be non-working and peace bonded. No functioning projectile weapons includes water pistols, silly-string guns, and ping-pong pistols. Bladed weapons must be cased or sheathed at all times. No clowning around or showing off in the common areas. Any weapon used in an offensive manner will be confiscated and rule #7 enforced. We expect you to use good judgment; with your help, we can continue to allow peace-bonded weapons - thanks!

I've seen some very realistic-looking guns as part of costumes.  I've also seen people walking around with unsheathed blades.  I was thinking about getting an airsoft gun because they look very realistic, however technically it would be against the rules.  However I imagine if you're cool and not a disruptive jerk, and not flaunting it around, you could get away with it.  I'm not really looking to "get away with" though, so I wonder if there's a better way to play by the rules.

As long as you don't actually shoot it, you're fine.  Blades are supposed to be peace-tied, technically, but I've honestly never seen any that were.  I know some of the Han Solo blasters are made of air soft guns that work.

No, it's up in the attic somewhere. It's very hot up there.

I'll try to take one but the camera isn't charged right now. When Randah charges the camera I will look for the gun.

No worries!  I appreciate a pic whenever you get a chance.  It's not worth suffocating in a hot attic for, believe me. :)  And if I don't have a musket/rifle, a katana will be enough, I think.  Amazing what a zombie head will add to a costume...

Replied. :)  Thanks!

Took me a bit to answer because I've been at a music fest in WV.  Just got home last night.
