buying a wig
« on: May 23, 2009, 09:14:36 PM »
being that I don't have too much experience with cosplaying.... yet... and I, like most people, don't want to be paying out of the nose for a wig... Does anyone out there have any suggestions for places/sites for getting cheap wigs that they'd like to share?
costumes:
MTAC 2009: Laguna Loire  (rushed job)
Dragon*con 2009: Laguna Loire (hopefully repaired and finished)
Dragon*con 2010: Laguna (keeping it alive!)
Nod soldier (Kane lives!)
Murphy Macmanus (hopefully me and my friend will be able to pull off making both costumes)

Check your city for wig shops first, then costume shops second, and use the interwebs only as a last resort.  You've got to check the quality and fit before you buy.  I am, in fact, driving four hours to shop for wigs in June (to visit friends and Ikea, too :)).

I do a lot (a LOT) of cosplay, and have actually found that the internet is preferable to local wig shops. For one thing, you can find a much larger variety of colours and styles, and for another, they're usually cheaper, and many are better quality.

I recommend cosplaywig on ebay...I buy from them all the time. Their wigs are on the pricier end of average (about $40 with shipping for a long wig), but the quality is really excellent and they fit a bigger range of head sizes.

Cosworx.com is also pretty great!

Anyway, good luck!
Dragon*Con 2009 costumes:
~Green Victorian Rufflebutt Dawn from the beginning of Lucifer's Halo
~Kaylee from Firefly
~Tyrande Whisperwind from World of Warcraft
~Lum (kimono version) from Urusei Yatsura
~Chichi from DBZ

My first D*C! I am super excited :D.

I love ebay for wigs. I've bought 2 wigs and one ponytail extension, and am very happy with them. Each were about $30 - $35 with shipping. Kanekalon are good. Good luck, and have fun!

Happiness doesn't depend on how much you have to enjoy, but how much you enjoy what you have.

i'm sorry for your loss. it isn't too late, i still don't have a wig. the wig that i would need would be around shoulder length, straight, black/dark brown, and without bangs.
